1. Are there any exercise
facilities in Sana'a, such as a gym or a swimming pool?
Yes. There are several gyms and pools.
2. Is there a shopping
complex near your institute? A hospital? Is the area safe for
walking?
Yes, we are in the diplomatic quarters.
3. What other sightseeing
options exist? What kind of entertainment is there in Sana'a?
There are many, depending on what you are interested in. There
are no cinemas, theaters and only a few expensive nightclubs.
Nightlife is not one of Yemen's attractions.
You are encouraged to pursue contacts, and
to seek out opportunities to meet and converse with Yemenis (in
Arabic, or course). Some suggestions for meeting people are
visits to the hammam, or public bath, Sana'a University,
public parks and gardens, teahouses and small Yemeni hotels,
restaurants, and the souq. You will undoubtedly have
numerous opportunities to attend qat chews, weddings and
other social events. Take advantage of these opportunities to
meet and speak with Yemenis in their own environment; your
efforts will be generously repaid with warm friendships and
improved Arabic skills. Weddings in Sana'a and most of Yemen are
segregated, with the women celebrating on different days.
