Arabic: Which One Should You Learn?
Never colonized by a European power, the people of Yemen speak Arabic almost
exclusively. This provides students with the rare opportunity to immerse themselves
completely in the language. Yemen is home to an ancient and dynamic culture
that only recently has begun to modernize -- often on its own terms. Steeped
in a history that stretches back to the Queen of Sheba, virtually every region
of Yemen has sites of cultural, archaeological, and architectural interest.
From
the Marib dam of the Qur'an to the towering mud skyscrapers of Shibam in the
Hadramaut, Yemen is a treasure waiting to be discovered.
MALI has two locations in Yemen both running Arabic programs. One is located
in the capital, Sana'a, renowned for the architecture and bustling souk of
the vast old city, which is protected by the United Nations with a $223.5
million dollar investment as a unique part of the human cultural heritage.
Lying at 7,800 feet, Sana'a has a temperate climate year-round. The second
is in Aden, in the former British Protectorate in the South sitting on the
Indian Ocean. Architecturally and culturally influenced by its former colonial
powers, Aden also offers an easier pace of life and a culture different from
that of Sana’a. Aden has a equatorial climate and is hot most of the year
round. The Red Sea and Indian Ocean are close by for vacations, and the cost
of living is very low. Most students spend less than US$5.00 a day for all
expenses.
